BASEBALL: Freshman's one-hitter gives LeTourneau doubleheader split with Arlington Baptist

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Barrett Calverley pitched a complete-game one-hitter as the LeTourneau YellowJackets salvaged a doubleheader split with Arlington Baptist on Friday.

Calverley (Terrell, Texas/Terrell) struck out five batters and walked only one as the YellowJackets claimed a 2-0 victory in the second game of the twinbill.

The freshman from Terrell held the Patriots hitless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Calverley (pictured) picked up his first collegiate decision with the victory.

Neither team scored until the sixth inning of the Friday finale. Garrett Methvin (Longview, Texas/Univ. of Arkansas) singled home Nate Tomaszewski (Dove Canyon, Calif./Tesoro) with the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning.

In the seventh inning, the Jackets plated an insurance run when Dustin Varnado (Gilmer, Texas/Gilmer) knocked a sacrifice fly to score Brent Sellers (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville). Sellers had led off the inning with a double.

Methvin and Daniel Francis (Henderson, Texas/Henderson) collected two hits in the game.

The Jackets lost the opener to the Patriots by a score of 2-1. Starting pitcher Jeremy Ringo (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair) absorbed the loss for LeTourneau (3-3).

Ringo gave up runs in the first and second inning, though only one of those runs was earned.

Drew Sharp (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) singled home Chuck Daugherty (Terrell, Texas/Terrell) in the top of the third for the YellowJackets only run in the game.

The Jackets displayed some solid fielding in the opener, turning double plays in three consecutive innings.

The Jackets return to action Saturday when they host Castleton State in a single, nine-inning contest. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
