BASEBALL: YellowJackets open 2012 season at Concordia Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The LeTourneau YellowJackets baseball team opened its 2012 season Saturday at the Rudy's BBQ Tornado Classic, hosted by Concordia Texas University.

The Jackets dropped two hard-fought contests to teams in the West Division of the American Southwest Conference. LeTourneau opened the day with a 2-0 loss to host Concordia, who improved to 6-0 with the victory.

The YellowJackets (0-2) concluded their Austin trip with a 10-7 loss to Howard Payne. HPU improved to 1-2 with the victory.

LeTourneau makes its home debut Wednesday when the YellowJackets host Southwestern Assemblies of God in a non-conference doubleheader. The games will be the first night home games in the history of LeTourneau University, as lights were installed at Conrad-Vernon Field in the fall.

First pitch between the Jackets and Lions is scheduled for 5 p.m.

CONCORDIA TEXAS 2, LeTOURNEAU 0
The Tornados needed only one swing of the bat to score both of their runs as Concordia Texas remained unbeaten by defeating the YellowJackets 2-0 in LeTourneau's season opener.

Nick Kozole's two-out RBI single in the fourth inning scored Cody Nevilles from second base for the Tornados' game-winning run. Alec Carter, who was at first base when Kozole came to the plate, also scored on the play thanks to a LeTourneau fielding error.

Steven Peterson pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win for the Tornados. He struck out one batter and walked three while not allowing a hit.

LeTourneau senior pitcher Travis Norris absorbed the loss in spite of pitching six solid innings and allowing only one earned run. Norris struck out six batters and walked only two while scattering six hits.

Kirby Cantalamessa pitched two innings in relief for the Jackets, striking out four batters and allowing only one hit.

Nate Tomaszewski went 2-for-4 with a double for the YellowJackets. Newcomers Rhett Bohannon and Andrew Doerrfeld also knocked doubles in their LeTourneau debuts.

HOWARD PAYNE 10, LeTOURNEAU 7
A five-run eighth inning proved to be the difference for the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets in their only meeting this season with LeTourneau.

Howard Payne's Ben Butler picked up two of his three RBIs on a double in the eighth inning that scored teammates Dustin Cole and Colton Buzzard. The hit gave HPU a 9-6 lead and Cole's run turned out to be the game-winner in the Saturday afternoon finale.

Chris Bertram went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the YellowJackets, raising his average to .500 after LeTourneau's first two contests. Bohannon collected his first multi-hit game for the Jackets, going 2-for-5 with an RBI double.

Doerrfeld went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Josh Francis and Matt Leftwich scored two runs apiece for the YellowJackets.

LeTourneau struck first by plating runs in the first and second innings. Leftwich scored an unearned run on an error in the first inning, and Rhett Bohannon knocked an RBI double to score Chuck Daugherty in the bottom of the second inning.

Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Jackets fought back with a pair of runs to reclaim a 6-5 lead. Doerrfeld's infield single to score Leftwich tied the game, and Daugherty's RBI groundout gave the Jackets the lead when Bertram scored from third base.

Jeremy Burke started and pitched four innings for the Jackets, scattering five hits and giving up only one earned run. Caleb Pritchett absorbed the loss for LeTourneau, pitching 2 2/3 innings.

Jonathan Morris picked up the win for Howard Payne, pitching three innings in relief. Butler earned the save after pitching the last 1 2/3 innings.
