MEN'S BASKETBALL: Schreiner trips up LeTourneau 69-55
LONGVIEW – Three Schreiner players scored at least 15 points to lead the visiting Mountaineers to a 69-55 win Saturday over the LeTourneau YellowJackets.
A.J. Myres scored 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting to lead the Mountaineers. Travis Pflughaupt scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Schreiner.
LeTourneau's Jarrod Hudgens (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery) and Cristian Driver (Houston, Texas/Atascocita) scored 11 points apiece to lead the YellowJackets. Hudgens led the team in scoring for the second game in a row after a 20-point showing Thursday against Texas Lutheran.
After LeTourneau (2-10, 1-8 ASC West) jumped out to a 5-0 lead three and a half minutes into the game, the Mountaineers seized control with a 17-2 run to give Schreiner a 17-7 lead with 11:26 remaining in the first period. The Mountaineers would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game and took a 31-22 lead into halftime.
Though the Mountaineers controlled the pace of the game in the second half, the Jackets fought valiantly to cut the Schreiner advantage to single-digits. LeTourneau used a 14-3 run between the 14:40 and 9:42 marks to cut Schreiner's lead to 47-45, with Driver and Deitrich Williams each scoring four points during that stretch.
With their lead threatened, however, the Mountaineers were able to regroup after the 10-minute media timeout and embarked on an 11-3 run of their own to push their lead back double-digits at 58-48 with 6:39 remaining in the contest.
Schreiner improved to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The win kept the Mountaineers in third place in the ASC West behind Hardin-Simmons and undefeated Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The ASC's interdivision play was completed Saturday with the ASC West teams winning 39 of the 56 league games against teams from the East Division.
LeTourneau assistant coach Michael Lewis said after the game that his team needs to "cut down on turnovers" (Schreiner forced 28 in the game), but added that the YellowJackets "will be ready for Tyler on Monday night."
The Patriots of UT Tyler make their return trip to Solheim Arena on Monday, trying to avenge a 67-64 loss to LeTourneau on their own home floor prior to the Christmas break. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
