MEN'S BASKETBALL: Louisiana College fends off LeTourneau 71-56
PINEVILLE, La. – A 7-0 run midway through the second half helped the Louisiana College Wildcats put some distance between themselves and LeTourneau in a 71-56 win over the YellowJackets on Saturday.
Jarrod Jackson scored a game-high 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting to lead Louisiana College, which had four players score at least 11 points in the game.
LeTourneau's Trey Perkins (Groesbeck, Texas/Groesbeck) scored 10 points and pulled in 10 rebounds to lead the Jackets. The freshman also blocked three shots in addition to posting his second career double-double.
Kendrae Carter (Houston, Texas/NW Oklahoma State) and Cristian Driver (Houston, Texas/Atascocita) scored 10 points and nine points, respectively, for the YellowJackets (4-17, 3-14 ASC East).
The Wildcats (7-11) remained a game and a half ahead of fourth-place Texas-Tyler in the American Southwest Conference's East Division standings. LC improved to 7-9 in conference play Saturday.
Louisiana College took a 25-22 lead into halftime, and neither team shot better than 30 percent from the field during the first 20 minutes.
While LeTourneau converted only one out of its nine 3-point tries before halftime, the Wildcats were particularly woeful from long range, shooting 1-of-18 (5.6 percent) from behind the 3-point arc in the first half.
The low-scoring first half preceded a second half which saw marked improvement out of both team's offenses. The Wildcats scored 46 points after halftime thanks to shooting 59 percent (17 of 29) from the floor.
The Jackets were able to keep pace with the Wildcats for most of the game until LC used a 7-0 run between the 10:53 and 9:05 marks to take a 51-41 lead. The Cats' lead never slipped below eight the rest of the game.
Luke Taylor, Jr. (Houston, Texas/Elsik) came off the LeTourneau bench to score nine points for the YellowJackets. Deitrich Williams (Fort Worth, Texas/Grace Prep Academy) scored six points for LeTourneau.
Williams and Jourdan Hughes (Dallas, Texas/Southwest Christian College) recorded three steals apiece in the game.
Shaun Johnson scored 13 points for Louisiana College while Jelani Mitchell and Korey Salmon chipped in 11 points apiece for the Wildcats.
