MEN'S BASKETBALL: Centenary edges LeTourneau 64-57

SHREVEPORT, La. -- A late second-half run vaulted the Centenary Gentlemen to a 64-57 win Thursday over the visiting LeTourneau YellowJackets.

A 15-2 run between the 8:18 and 1:37 marks of the second half gave Centenary its first lead of the game at 57-55 as the Gents held off LeTourneau in the final minute and half of the contest.

Maxx Nakwaasah scored a game-high 25 points for the Gents (10-9), who are in their first year of NCAA Division III play after moving down from Division I and the Summit League.

As Centenary is in its first year of transition into NCAA Division III competition, games against the Gents do not count in the league standings.

Cristian Driver (Houston, Texas/Atascocita) scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the YellowJackets. Josh Thornton (DeSoto, Texas/Grace Prep) added 15 points off the LeTourneau bench. A redshirt freshman, Thornton's 15 points were a collegiate-high as he scored in double-figures for the first time in his LeTourneau career.

Trey Perkins (Groesbeck, Texas/Groesbeck) scored seven points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds for the YellowJackets (4-18). The 15 rebounds were the most by a YellowJacket player this season.

LeTourneau led 30-21 at halftime after the Jackets held the Gents to 22 percent shooting in the opening period. YellowJacket players shot 36 percent (5 of 14) from the 3-point circle in the first half.

The Jackets return to action Saturday when they face Piney Woods rival East Texas Baptist in a conference matchup. Tipoff from Ornelas Arena is scheduled for 3 p.m.
