MEN'S GOLF: Weant wins the Schreiner Spring Shootout, YellowJackets finish third
KERRVILLE, Texas – Midyear transfer Justin Weant won the individual championship of the Schreiner Spring Shootout and led the LeTourneau YellowJackets to a third-place team finish Tuesday at the Club at Comanche Trace in Kerrville.
Weant (Hallsville, Texas/Stephen F. Austin State) carded 1-over-par-73s on each day of the event to finish with a total of 146. He finished the event tied with Erik Long-Goheen of Trinity, and Weant was awarded the championship via a scorecard tiebreaker.
The Jackets finished with a two-day team total of 606, which tied with fellow American Southwest Conference team Hardin-Simmons. The Cowboys claimed second place via a lower score from their fifth golfer. (The best four scores make up a team's standard total.)
UT-Tyler won the event with a team score of 599 as all five Patriot golfers shot 76 or better on the second day of the event.
Spencer Rothluebber (Jefferson, N.H./White Mountain Regional HS) fired an even par on Tuesday to give him a two-day score of 150. LeTourneau teammate Jacob Clay (Denton, Texas/Denton) also carded a 150 for the event. Clay and Rothluebber finished tied for sixth on the Shootout's individual leader board.
Hayden Adams (Newark, Texas/Allen) shot a 160 for the YellowJackets.
Weant's victory was the second this year by a LeTourneau player at a Schreiner-hosted event. Rothluebber won the Schreiner Fall Classic in October to conclude the YellowJackets' fall season.
The Jackets will next hit the links Monday and Tuesday of next week when they compete at the Mississippi College Invitational in Delhi, La.
