MEN'S GOLF: Clay, Adams lead Jackets at West Region Invitational

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Jacob Clay and Hayden Adams both placed among the top 20 individual competitors at the West Region Invitational Tournament, hosted by Southwestern University.

At the Berry Creek Country Club, Clay tied for ninth place after shooting a three-round score of 231. Adams finished in a tie for 19th place after carding a score of 236 over the two-day event.

Collectively, the YellowJackets placed seventh out of 10 teams with a score of 941 in their final tuneup before the American Southwest Conference Tournament next week in Lufkin, Texas. The Jackets finished four strokes behind Millsaps and Mary Hardin-Baylor, which tied for fifth place.

Clay posted two sub-77 rounds on Monday, shooting a 3-over-par 75 in the first round and then shooting a 76 in the second round. He rounded out the tournament with an 80 in Tuesday's third round, and finished tied for sixth among ASC golfers at the event.

Adams, meanwhile, carded rounds of 78 and 83 Monday before shooting a season-best 75 in Tuesday's third round. Adams' third-round score and Top 20 finish was his best showing since the Feb., 2011 Louisiana Wildcat Classic, when he finished 10th and carded a 74 in the first round.

LeTourneau's Steven Morris carded two sub-80 rounds on Monday, shooting 78 and 79, respectively before finishing with a final score of 238. Spencer Rothluebber shot a 239 to round out the Jackets' four-player team score.

Morris finished 26th out of 60 competitors, while Rothluebber finished 28th.

Freshman Will Park shot 246 for the YellowJackets, finishing 44th in the individual competition.

Southwestern won the team event with a three-day score of 908. Jack Cersosimo of Concordia Texas shot a 212 to win the individual competition.

The YellowJackets compete in the ASC Championship next Monday and Tuesday at the Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin.
