TENNIS: Centenary snaps winning streaks of LeTourneau men, women
LONGVIEW -- The LeTourneau tennis teams dropped decisions to visiting Centenary on Saturday, with the women falling 7-2 while the men were edged 5-4 in a close match.
The visiting Ladies and Gents each snapped seven-match winning streaks of the LeTourneau teams.
LeTourneau's Carlos Cantu picked up two of LeTourneau's four wins in the men's match. He turned away Sam Grace by scores of 6-2, 6-4 in the flight one singles, and teamed with Josh Bailey to defeat Grace and Evan Magill 8-4 in flight one doubles play.
Cantu's win in singles play was his 11th consecutive triumph and improved his individual record to 11-1 in 2012.
Taylor Gregoire also picked up two wins, as he teamed with Will Cazares in flight three doubles to defeat John Reeks and Cameron Bueche by a score of 8-5. In flight six singles play, Gregoire defeated Alex Savoie 6-4, 6-3.
The YellowJacket men (10-2) dropped their first dual match since Feb. 25, when they were narrowly defeated 5-4 by Mary Hardin-Baylor.
In the women's match, Sarah Case and Kayla Bonina picked up the two victories for the Jackets in singles play. Case needed extra tennis to defeat Isadora Bickham in flight one as she dropped the opening set 2-6 before winning 7-6 and 10-6. Case won the second set tiebreaker by a score of 8-6.
In flight five singles play, Bonina eased to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Holly Clark. Bonina's victory was her seventh consecutive win in singles competition.
The YellowJacket women (9-4) ceded two matches and moved three players up one flight in competition due to Shelby May's weekend illness. The LeTourneau women had also won seven straight matches before Saturday.
The YellowJackets play their first ASC East matches next week when they face Louisiana College in Shreveport at the LSU-Shreveport courts. Next Saturday's match is scheduled for 9 a.m.
