SOFTBALL: Tuel's triple lifts LeTourneau to 5-4 win over UT-Dallas, DH split
LONGVIEW -- Juliana Tuel's sixth-inning triple scored the tying and winning runs for LeTourneau as the YellowJackets tripped up Texas-Dallas 5-4 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday.
The visiting Comets took the first game by a score of 10-3.
Trailing 4-3 with two outs and Sara Whitehead and Anna Winter on base, Tuel (White Oak, Texas) drilled a 1-2 pitch from Heather Foust to right-centerfield, allowing her teammates to score and give the Jackets the lead.
Tuel's hit completed a three-run inning by the Jackets, which started when Christin Mickelboro (Longview, Texas) scored from first on an errant throw by UT-Dallas third baseman Brittanie Knowles on Kelli Parton's sacrifice bunt.
Parton (Henderson, Texas) threw all seven innings for the Jackets and didn't allow an earned run as she improved to 8-3 on the season. Foust took the loss and saw her record drop to 14-4.
Tuel went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Ashley McPhail went 2-for-3 in the game, and knocked a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to cut Texas-Dallas' lead to 3-2.
Whitehead also knocked two base hits in the game.
In Saturday's opener, the Comets took a 5-0 lead after three innings. They added five more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 10-1 lead.
The Jackets added two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh when Brooklyn Greene (Hallsville, Texas) and McPhail knocked RBIs.
The YellowJackets (17-18) improved to 6-14 in ASC East Division play, while the Comets (21-13) fell to 9-11 in the league standings.
The Jackets conclude the home portion of their schedule Wednesday when they host Mississippi College in a doubleheader scheduled for 4 p.m.
