Lee's career-best 74 paces LeTourneau at UMHB Fall Invitational
TEMPLE, Texas – LeTourneau senior Leslie Lee shot a career-best 74 in the second round of the UMHB Lady Cru Fall Invitational to claim second place in the individual competition Tuesday at the Wildflower Country Club.
Lee's two-day score of 156 helped lead the YellowJackets' women's golf team to a combined team score of 706, which placed eighth in the field of 10 teams at the event.
The two-time defending ASC individual champion, Lee (Longview, Texas/Spring Hill) shaved two strokes off her previous best individual round score of 76, which she shot at the second round of the 2009 American Southwest Conference championship.
But Lee's personal best was not the only record to fall among the LeTourneau linksters this week – Candice Nishimura (San Mateo, Calif./Aragon) carded a personal-best 79 in the second round to give her a two-day total of 174.
The sub-80 performances turned in by Lee and Nishimura in the second round helped the YellowJackets to shoot 342 as a team on Tuesday, which marked the best team round in head coach Lauren Gentry's four-year tenure.
Freshman Colleen Fal (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) shot identical 91's on Monday and Tuesday to give her a two-day score of 182 in her collegiate debut.
Senior golfer Elizabeth Zapata (Longview, Texas/Spring Hill) recorded rounds of 96 and 98 to give her a two-day score of 194.
Jacki Marshall of Tyler Junior College won the individual title with a two-day total of 151. Texarkana Community College, anchored by four players scoring in the Top 10, won the team event with a combined score of 658, 24 strokes ahead of second-place Schreiner.
Lee's two-day total of 156 was six strokes ahead of Katie Flynn of Texarkana and Sarah Stillwell of Schreiner.
The LeTourneau women's golf team will return to action Oct. 10 when they compete in the Birmingham Southern Shootout in Birmingham, Ala.
