VOLLEYBALL: YellowJackets go 1-2 in first weekend of the ASC Dig Pink Crossover Challenge

SEGUIN, Texas – The LeTourneau volleyball team gave Texas Lutheran a scare in game three before the Bulldogs were able to claim a match victory on their home court in the Jackets' final contest of the ASC Dig Pink Crossover Challenge I on Saturday.

Scores of the match were 25-14, 25-18 and 25-23.

Jo Runnels (Channelview, Texas/Channelview) and Chelsea Bowers (Anaheim, Calif./Orange Lutheran) knocked down eight kills apiece to lead the YellowJackets on Saturday. Those totals were topped only by Vanecia Spencer's nine kills for the Bulldogs.

In LeTourneau's three matches at the Seguin section of the weekend's crossover matches, Runnels led the team with 36 kills and compiled a team-high .329 hitting percentage.

Brooke Sheranko (Spring, Texas/Oak Ridge) tallied a match-high 20 assists for LeTourneau and Shana Evans led the YellowJacket defense with a match-high 14 digs. Sheranko added nine digs of her own.

Evans (Gladewater, Texas/Gladewater) tallied 32 digs in LeTourneau's three weekend matches. Sophomore libero Jessica Zabojnik (Burleson, Texas/Burleson) dug 30 opposition attacks during the two-day event.

Trailing 17-12 in game number three, the YellowJackets claimed a two-point lead after a 9-2 run which was sparked by two kills each from Evans and Runnels as well as four TLU errors. Evans finished the match with six kills.

The YellowJackets held leads of 22-20 and 23-22 in game three. However, the Bulldogs were able to string together a three-point run and claim a match victory.

Zabojnik finished the match with seven digs for the YellowJackets.

The YellowJackets return to action Tuesday when they travel to Shreveport for a rematch with the Centenary College Ladies. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Since Centenary College is in its first year of transition to Division III from scholarship-level Division I, the match between the Ladies and the YellowJackets will not count in the American Southwest Conference standings.

The ASC's teams will reconvene next weekend for the second round of the ASC Dig Pink Crossover Challenge. The YellowJackets will not have to travel far, as they will compete in the section hosted by the University of Texas at Tyler.
